More about this plant
Compact nandina is an evergreen shrub with cane like stems and finely divided, bamboo like compound foliage that emerges copper pink, matures green and turns purple red in fall and winter. Loose panicles of small white flowers in late spring are followed by sprays of shiny red berries that persist through winter and draw songbirds. It grows about 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, takes full sun through shade, tolerates clay, sand or loam at any pH, and is deer and drought resistant. Use it for foundation plantings, low hedges, borders and containers. All parts are poisonous if eaten, and this fruiting form self sows and is treated as invasive in the Southeast.
