More about this plant

A rapid growing broadleaf evergreen shrub with opposite, leathery, glossy dark green leaves and smooth gray twigs marked by large lenticels. Creamy white flowers open on 2 to 6 inch terminal panicles in late spring and are followed by flat blue black drupes in fall that birds carry off. It takes clay, loam, sand or shallow rocky soil with good drainage, tolerates drought, salt and pollution, and stands up to heat, which is why it is used so heavily as a clipped hedge and screen. Note that the species self sows freely and is listed as an invasive species, and that fruits and leaves are poisonous to people, dogs, cats and horses.
