More about this plant
Schip laurel is a spreading, hardy and vigorous cherry laurel of refined appearance, growing about 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide with dark green foliage, white flowers and black fruit. It differs from Otto Luyken in carrying toothed leaf margins. Growth is fast, 25 inches or more a year, in partial shade to full sun and moist, well drained soil supplemented with organic matter, and the plant tolerates alkaline soils, dry and poor soils, pollution and heavy pruning. Small black fruits follow the mid spring flowers, which are often hidden by the leaves. Root rot occurs in wet locations and shot hole disease can spot the leaves, but the plant is generally more disease and insect resistant than other Prunus species.
