More about this plant
Royal Purple is an award winning smoketree with striking deep purple foliage that turns gold, orange, purple and red in fall. It makes an erect, open, spreading multi stemmed shrub or small tree, 10 to 15 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide. Small yellow flowers in spring are followed by billowy pink to purple panicles 6 to 8 inches long that give the plant its smoky look through summer. It wants full sun and takes clay through shallow rocky soil at any pH, with good drainage and occasional dryness, and resists deer, drought, disease and insect pests. Use it as an accent, border, screen or specimen. The resinous sap can cause contact dermatitis.
