More about this plant
A seed grown ginkgo, the classic form of this living fossil, reaching 50 to 80 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide with a gangly, irregular crown when young that matures full and round to pyramidal. The fan shaped emerald green leaves are 2 to 3 inches long, clustered on short spur shoots, and turn brilliant golden yellow before shedding almost all at once. It takes full sun in clay, loam or sand across acid to alkaline soils, and tolerates heat, drought, salt, pollution and urban conditions. A seedling tree takes 20 to 30 years to reveal its sex, and a female will produce plumlike seeds whose fleshy pulp is foul smelling and irritating to skin.
