More about this plant
A tight mound of deep purple black glossy foliage 18 to 24 inches tall and wide that holds leaves on the ends of its branches all year, so it reads as semi evergreen. Small yellow flowers open in late spring. It is highly deer resistant, takes average or poor soil with average water, and needs no pruning to keep its neat shape. Unlike other Japanese barberries this one is a sterile selection: berries develop but carry no seed, proven in multiple rounds of university testing, so it is described as not invasive like other types. Use it as an edging, a border, a groundcover or in mass plantings in any sunny spot.
- Full Sun
- Grows to 2 ft tall and 2 ft wide
- Blooms in spring
- Hardy in USDA zones 6a-8b
- Semi-Evergreen foliage
