More about this plant

A compact panicle hydrangea 3 to 5 feet tall and wide with strong stems that do not droop. The lime green blooms open chartreuse, deepen through rich pink and turn burgundy in fall, carrying from early summer into fall, and soil pH does not affect their colour. Proven Winners recommends part sun to sun with at least four hours of light, average water, pruning in late winter or early spring since it blooms on new wood, and a controlled release fertilizer in early spring. It suits borders, foundation plantings, containers, mass plantings and fresh or dried cut flowers.

Flowers
Lime green blooms that open chartreuse, deepen to rich pink and turn burgundy in fall, held on strong stems that do not droop.
Foliage
Opposite, simple, oval to ovate leaves, sometimes whorled toward the tip, 3 to 6 inches long and 1.5 to 3 inches wide, dark green above and light green beneath, fading to yellow in fall.
Fruit
A brownish pink dehiscent oval capsule that does not attract wildlife, appearing in summer and fall.
Bark & stems
Grayish brown bark that shreds when mature and is irregularly furrowed; stems tend to droop under the weight of the flowers.
Pruning
Blooms on new wood. Prune in late winter or early spring. Apply a controlled release fertilizer in early spring; supplemental liquid feeding may be needed in mid summer.
Native range
Eastern and southern China, Japan, Sakhalin, Taiwan and Kuril Island
