More about this plant
Oakleaf is a hybrid holly of the Red Holly series, a seedling selection of Ilex 'Mary Nell'. It matures to an upright pyramid about 15 to 20 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide, with new growth that emerges bronze to burgundy red before turning emerald green. Unusually for a holly it is hermaphrodite, so it sets a profuse crop of 3/8 inch berries that ripen orange-red in November without a separate male pollinator. Hardy in zones 6 to 9, it is used as a screen, a large hedge or a specimen.
- Full Sun
- Grows to 20 ft tall and 15 ft wide
- Blooms in spring
- Hardy in USDA zones 6-9

- Foliage
- New growth emerges bronze to burgundy red and matures to emerald green, with oak-like lobed spines along the margins.
- Fruit
- A profuse crop of berries about 3/8 inch across that mature to orange-red in November; the flowers are hermaphrodite so the plant is self-fruitful and needs no separate male pollinator.
