More about this plant

A hybrid azalea in the genus Rhododendron, grown as a rounded, slow growing shrub with alternate, entire, glossy and leathery leaves. Azaleas carry funnel shaped flowers 1 to 3 inches across in spring, followed by a small brown capsule in fall, and the thin bark peels or shreds. They want dappled sunlight or partial shade with protection from afternoon sun, and an acid soil rich in organic matter that drains well while staying moist; Clemson gives the preferred pH as 4.5 to 6.0 and recommends morning sun with afternoon shade. Shallow roots are easily damaged by excessive soil moisture. The flowers draw hummingbirds, pollinators and specialized bees, and deer browse the plants heavily.

  • Part Shade
  • Grows to 6 ft tall and 6 ft wide
  • Blooms in spring
  • Hardy in USDA zones 6-9
  • Semi-Evergreen foliage
