More about this plant

Bloodgood is a dense, erect, rounded Japanese maple that matures at about 15 to 20 feet tall and 12 to 20 feet wide, often multi trunked. Its palmately lobed leaves, 3 to 6 inches across, hold deep purple red colour through the season and finish red burgundy in fall, carried on dark brown to reddish bark. It is slow growing and low maintenance, preferring dappled sunlight to partial shade and a moist, well drained soil of clay, loam or sand rich in organic matter, in an acid to neutral range. Small red spring flowers are insignificant and are followed by reddish samaras. Watch for aphids, scale, borers, leaf scorch and verticillium wilt. Use it as a small shade tree, specimen or understory tree, in a container or beside a patio or walkway.
